10 Best Movie Performances Of The 21st Century

In every movie of the 21st century so far, there has been a character that stood out among the rest. We all have our favorites as to who is the best and who is the worst.  The actors who portray the characters have one agenda: To make you laugh, cry or scare the heck out of you. Surely we can’t put everyone on the list. Here is a list of some of the best movie performances of the 21st century.

10. Amy Adams – Giselle, “Enchanted” (2007)

Amy Adams did a phenomenal job as Giselle as she convinced the audience that she was really a princess trapped in a world she had no idea what it was all about. The part that sold it for many people was when she addressed the shower by saying, “The shower, the shower is wonderful Nancy.” There are many parts in which bring you into the world of Enchanted and not to mention, Adams has a lovely voice when she sings as well.

9. Alan Rickman – Severus Snape, “Harry Potter” (2001-2011)

If there was ever a character to win the best double agent, Snape would win hands down. Alan Rickman was the best choice for Severus Snape in “Harry Potter” as he showed depth to the character that the book explains so well. Not often do you have a character who matches the character in the book so well. With his monotone speech and serious tone, Rickman captivated audiences every time he came on screen. You hated him and then you loved him.

8. Octavia Spencer – Minny Jackson, “The Help” (2011)

Octavia Spencer’s performance in “The Help” has to be noticed. The best part of her acting was when she fed her “chocolate pie” to Miss Hilly with her feces inside of it. After she complimented it, the secret was revealed. Throughout the entire film, you felt for the character and the struggles she had to go through. She brought the audience in and even won the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Minny.

7. Ian McKellen – Gandalf, “The Lord of the Rings” (2001-2003)

Who doesn’t think that Gandalf is the coolest wizard around? The role that Ian McKellen personified was amazing in every detail. By the looks of him, you feel he is only a frail old man. However, he turns out to be a powerful wizard who has the ability to please audiences around the world. The casting was perfect and he showed his skills as a talented actor. When you match a character so closely to the book, you have the chance to please not only movie goers, but also fans of the books. This was one of those moments.

6. Jennifer Lawrence – Ree Dolly, “Winter’s Bone” (2010)

Here we have an actress who has managed to put so much emotion into her performance that audiences were unable not to hang on every word. Jennifer Lawrence took on the role of Ree Dolly and showed that she is tough when things got rough. When she stood up to the Meth Dealers in the movie, chills went down the backs of everyone watching. She was amazing as she took the role and made it a part of her.

5. Daniel Day-Lewis – Abraham Lincoln, “Lincoln” (2010)

Day-Lewis has also won four BAFTA Awards for Best Actor, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, three Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. This performance in “Lincoln” was phenomenal from start to finish. He personified the man who abolished slavery and gave an emotional tribute to the 16th President of the United States.

4. Russell Crowe – Maximus Decimus Meridius, “Gladiator” (2000)

Guts and glory were prevalent in Crowe’s role as Maximus in “Gladiator”. The role suited the New Zealand-born actor amazingly well. With a convincing attitude to the role, Crowe was great as he won Best Actor in several awards ceremonies. When he says “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next,” it echoed around the theater.

3. Johnny Depp – Sweeny Todd, “Sweeny Todd” (2007)

Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the character, Sweeny Todd, speaks volumes of his talent as an actor. Not only does he know how to act, he knows how to sing! It is non-stop thrills when he comes on screen in “Sweeny Todd” and he is amazing again with the way he makes the character believable. Depp is amazing in everything he does, maybe not so much in “Alice In Wonderland”, but he shows every time, that he is an actor who is never going to go without work.

2. Robert Downey Jr. – Tony Stark, “Iron Man” (2007-2013)

Despite going through all the drug addictions, you can’t see any trace of that as Robert Downey Jr. turns a comic book hero into a legend. Everyone wants to be Iron Man for Halloween because Downey Jr. made the character funny, exciting and amazing. From the beginning of the Iron Man franchise, people began to fall in love with his portrayal of the famed comic book superhero. He was able to make the role comical with a witty script to help him out.

1. Heath Ledger – The Joker, The Dark Knight (2008)

After his performance as The Joker in “The Dark Knight”, sadly Heath Ledger passed away. However, this one performance was the peak of his career as an actor and he made the character better than all the Jokers of the past. He was able to take a character and make him the crazy character he was written as and make it scary. Everyone knows that you don’t mess with The Joker, but Ledger was able to make you terrified of him and walk out saying, “That guy is one crazy dude”.
